Lukagwa is from three name initials put together.In Ugandan language the name means 'that which has fallen'we embraced this to mean 'our ideas have fallen from the heavens'.
This social enterprise was started by people who are passionate about art and using it to make a positive impact on society.
We sought to use Art as a vehicle for change through empwerment of the girldchild.At the time i had volunteered in an NGO notably Kenya Slum Youth Development organization and Slumcode.These outfits sought to empower young women who were unable to complete their education due to financial struggles or early pregnancy.In partnership with these organisations Lukagwa managed to train some young women and equip them with the art of making jewelry.
We later on incorporated some of the ladies in Lukagwa as our apprecentice.We use art to change their attitude towards life and ensure sustainable income.When you buy Lukagwa you ensure the ladies can feed their families and continue to pursue their life ambitions.
Some of our members dropped out of school at a tender age due to unplanned pregnancy and had to fend for their child.One is currently a mother to a beautiful teenager and a playful little boy.Another member wasn't able to pursue higher education due to limited funds;she has enrolled in part time classes to learn music.Our former apprecentices went on to start their own business after learning the skill.Later on we were joined by young women who were seeking employment and mentorship in Art.
In our little way we continue to make a difference.In our local we say when u empower a woman you are investing in the society as a whole.
It has been a tough journey full of challenges.When i look at our team and the progress we have made so far it has been worth it.Together we trudge on despite the obstacles ,for the love of our work and the positive impact.
